Mitochondrial disorders or diseases, are a group of rare and complex disorders caused by mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or nuclear DNA that affect the function of mitochondria. Some examples are:
- Mitochondrial Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like Episodes (MELAS)
- Leigh syndrome
- Myoclonic epilepsy with ragged red fibers (MERRF)
- Chronic Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia (CPEO)
- Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndromes
- Mitochondrial Neurogastrointestinal Encephalopathy (MNGIE)
- Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON)
- Mitochondrial myopathy
- Mitochondrial cardiomyopathy
- Sensorineural hearing loss associated with mitochondrial disorders
- Mitochondrial ataxias
- Mitochondrial diabetes
